AT&T is getting more proactive with the "It Can Wait" campaign, which reminds people not to text and drive.
The cell phone service provider created new texting lingo, #X, for teens to stop texting and driving. The symbol #X quickly signals to the person they are texting that they are getting behind the wheel of a car and are pausing the conversation.
The new #X campaign comes after AT&T surveyed 1,200 teens about their habits texting and driving. They found that 61 percent of teens admit to glancing at their phone when it goes off while driving and 43 percent text while driving even though they know it's not safe.
The numbers increase significantly when the teen driver is at a red light.
Teens are acknowledging that texting and driving is unsafe. In AT&T's survey 97 percent say they know it's unsafe to text and drive, despite the fact that a lot of them still do it. On the It Can Wait campaign website, 5,272,515 pledges were made at the time this article was posted from teens that say they will stop texting and driving.
AT&T is also encouraging drivers to use #X on Twitter.
