Dunkin' Donuts is the next fast-food chain to jump on the fatty treats trend with their nationwide release of the "Glazed Donut Breakfast Sandwich."
The new sandwich consists of fried eggs and bacon between a split glazed doughnut. It will become be available to order at any Dunkin' Donuts starting June 7, which the chain claims is "National Donut Day."
Dunkin' Donuts had tested the sandwich in select stores in eastern Massachusetts in April. The chain also claims the sandwich is only 360 calories.
Stan Frankenthaler, executive chef and vice president of product innovation at Dunkin' Donuts, told the Associated Press that "the chain's recent offerings of a breakfast sandwich with turkey sausage and the new doughnut sandwich are in line with its goal of offering as much variety as possible."
The sandwich is the latest introduced in fast-food chains, competing with Wendy's rumoured pretzel burger and Burger King's hands-free whopper.
Companies are following the success of Taco Bell's Doritos Locos Tacos to generate hype for their restaurants. Taco Bell told the AP the item helped lift sales at established restaurants by 8 percent last year, calling the taco its most successful menu item ever.
According to the Associated Press, "the latest concoction may seem to conflict with the push by companies to court customers with better-for-you offerings. For example, options like egg whites and whole grain bread have become common as fast-food chains scramble to attract people in their 20s and 30s, who they say want fresher, wholesome food."
Dunkin' Donuts already allows its customers to customize their sandwiches in multiple ways, giving them healthier options in their choice of bread and bagels.
In an interview with the Associated Press, Frankenthaler confirmed stores would allow you to choose what kind of donut you would like your "Glazed Donut Breakfast Sandwich" to be prepared with, giving the option of a chocolate glazed as a substitute.
