'True Detective' Season 2 Cast Confirmed: Colin Farrell And Vince Vaughn Join HBO Series

HBO has confirmed what many have speculated for months: Colin Farrell and Vince Vaughn will star in “True Detective” season two.

The pay-cable network also released an official synopsis for the Emmy-winning series and character descriptions for Farrell and Vaughn. Season two will revolve around three police offers and career criminal who “must navigate a web of conspiracy in the aftermath of a murder.”

Farrell confirmed his role as Ray Velcoro to Ireland’s Sunday World on Sept. 21. “I’m doing the second series. I’m so excited,” he said.

His character is a “compromised detective whose allegiances are torn between his masters in a corrupt police department and the mobster who owns him,” according to HBO. Vaughn will place Frank Semyon, “a career criminal in danger of losing his empire when his move into legitimate enterprise is upended by the murder of a business partner.”

Farrell could only reveal that filming would take place around Los Angeles and last between four to five months. “I know very little about it, but we’re shooting in the environs of Los Angeles which is great. It means I get to stay at home and see the kids,” the Irish actor told the Sunday World.

HBO also confirmed the news that “Fast & Furious” director Justin Lin would helm the first two episodes. Last season, Emmy winner Cary Joji Fukunaga directed every episode. The show creator Nic Pizzolatto will return to write every episode.

Two law enforcement roles remain uncast. Pizzolatto said one officer will be a woman and nearly a dozen women have been rumored for the part. Rachel McAdams and Elisabeth Moss’ names have appeared most often in speculative reports, but Jessica Biel, Malin Akerman, Jamie Alexander, Brit Marling, Oona Chaplin and Kelly Reilly have recently entered the race.

“The Normal Heart” star Taylor Kitsch has also been considered for the second male officer role.

“True Detective” season two will likely premiere next summer.
