A loaded shotgun was discovered at Miami International Airport on Monday afternoon in a bathroom at Terminal D, opening an investigation into how the gun got there in the first place, according to CBS.
The shotgun was found inside the bathroom, and two boxes of ammunition were discovered outside of the bathroom in the same terminal, according to CBS. The gun was reportedly found wrapped in a towel inside a garbage can with five rounds loaded at around 3:30 p.m.
The shotgun was initially discovered by an airport custodian named Rudolphe Guerrier, not authorities, CBS reported.
The Federal Bureau of Investigation, ATF and Department of Homeland Security are investigating, CBS reported. A senior law enforcement source described the discovery as "scary."
Investigators are also reviewing video from the airport to determine where the gun came from and who it may belong to, according to CBS.
Miami-Dade Police say they are looking to see if the gun is registered, adding that some guns are found at the airport after passengers abandon them instead of taking them home to secure them, CBS reported.
"As I went to change the garbage can, I looked inside and saw the object in the can and then I called police," said Guerrier, according to CBS. "It was wrapped in a towel. Then I put the plastic back around the garbage can."
Guerrier said he was stunned that he found a weapon inside the airport, adding that he has "never seen that before," CBS reported.
Dogs were brought in to help sweep the area, but passengers were not evacuated from the terminal, according to CBS. Airline passengers said they were surprised by the discovery.
"I think it's scary. It's definitely scary," said LeTonya Taylor, CBS reported. "For someone who travels all the time that they were even able to get a gun in here in the airport it's scary, even if they did not get it past the checkpoint."
