Police charged Jesse (L.J.) Matthew with the abduction on Monday in the case of missing University of Virginia student Hannah Graham, The New York Daily News reported.
Matthew, 32, is on the run from police, Charlottesville Police Chief Timothy Longo said on Tuesday. The 270-pound suspect was seen on surveillance video with the girl at an outdoor downtown shopping mall. Police have searched his apartment twice, most recently on Monday.
He is charged with abduction with intent to defile. Graham has not been seen since Sept. 13. Investigators were waiting on the results of lab reports from clothes taken from Matthew's home during Monday's search.
He has worked as a patient technician at the University Medical Center on the school's campus since 2012.
Charlottesville officers have been eying Matthew since Friday, when police spotted him in a videotape with the 18-year-old the morning she vanished.
He is also charged with reckless driving after he sped off from a police station Saturday without answering questions. Police have been looking for him since he led police on a high-speed chase before eventually getting away, NBC Washington reported.
The Department of Forensic Science's Central Laboratory in Richmond, which is testing samples gathered from Matthew's apartment, has expedited the case and is hoping to provide authorities with results in the "very near future." But the lab could spend hours to an entire day on a single piece of evidence that may have multiple hairs or fibers on it. It is standard procedure to compare any samples against those in their database of other missing persons cases in central Virginia.
Online court records show Matthew was convicted of trespassing in 2010, but provide no further details about the incident. Information was also unavailable for two other charges of assault and attempted grand larceny, relating to a 2009 incident that did not go to court. Matthew also has several traffic infractions, according to available public data.
