A pregnant woman was thrown on the ground by New York Police Department cops following an altercation that was captured on camera this weekend. The officials said they were reviewing the video.
Sandra Amezquita, 43, said she was afraid for her unborn child after the incident that happened during the arrest of her 17-year-old son Saturday. "I'm afraid what might happen to my baby. I am praying to God he's born healthy.
The row between Amezquita and the officers happened at 2:15 a.m. Saturday in Sunset Park, Brooklyn. According to the police, they found a gravity knife clipped to Amezquita's teenage son Jhohan Lemos' pants. Police tried to arrest Lemos who resisted, reports ABC. A NYPD source said that the teen's father, Ronel Lemos, and another man allegedly threw an officer to the ground and began punching him.
The incident is being probed by the Internal Affairs Bureau. Amezquita's attorney Sanford Rubenstein said she was struck with a lightweight baton called an ASP. He showed pictures of Amezquita's bruised belly with red marks. He said he plans to file a suit against the NYPD, reports the New York Post.
Patrick Lynch, president of the Patrolmen's Benevolent Association, the union that represents the officers, said the video doesn't show the lead-up to Amezquita's arrest.
Lemos, who has been arrested several times, was charged with criminal possession of a weapon.
Patrick Lynch, president of the Patrolmen's Benevolent Association, the union that represents the officers, said the video does not show the lead-up to Amezquita's arrest. "This dark, grainy video didn't capture, as most videos don't, the crime that led to the arrest in the first place," he said, reports The Wall Street Journal. "No one should ever resist arrest, nor should anyone interfere with an arrest in progress."
The NYPD, however, did not deny that Amezquita was hit with a baton.
