Life is not good for Florida Gators fans right now.
Following a record-setting loss to No. 3 Alabama last week, Florida athletic director Jeremy Foley said that the school will evaluate coach Will Muschamp after the season, ESPN reported. If the 42-21 loss to the Crimson Tide is any indication, however, Muschamp's future with the Gators could be short, despite the support shown by Foley.
"You never judge or evaluate a program based on one game or one season," Foley told "Open Mike" on 790 The Game in Orlando. "That's just not how we do things here. We're going to evaluate where we're headed -- where the players are, how is recruiting going, what type of staff we have, are we better? That's going to be plain for all of us to see, but it's also going to be played out over the course of 11 games, and we'll see where we are when we get to the end of the season."
Florida may be 2-1 so far this season, but the team is coming off a game in which they allowed a school-record of 645 yards. The Gators have won only two of their last 10 games dating back to last season. This includes a 1-6 record against SEC teams.
Muschamp didn't beat around the bush when asked about his team's performance on Wednesday.
"We stunk on defense," Muschamp said. "I'm extremely disappointed two games in a row of giving up the big plays we've given up defensively. We've got to get some things tied together better on the back end. That's the bottom line. The mistakes we've made in some situations back there are inexcusable."
Muschamp is succeeding Urban Meyer, one of the most successful coaches in the school's history. Meyer won two national championships during his six years with the Gators. Immediately following his departure, Florida went 7-6 under Muschamp, including their first losing conference record (3-5) since 1979. Overall, Florida is 24-17 with Muschamp as head coach.
The Gators have a bye this week before they visit the Tennessee Volunteers on Oct. 4.
