Two weeks ahead of the latest Superman movie, “Man of Steel”, Warner Bros. has released an extended featurette that will allows fans to peer a little bit more into the story the film will tell.
The makers of the movie decided to go away from the traditional story about the Kryptonian hero.
“Our approach was not a comic book Superman, it was just to do a more realistic Superman,” said David S. Goyer, famous screenwriter and comic writer.
“What Chris and David did was say ‘Let’s let the audience participate in the experience of being Superman without breaking the things that make him Superman,’” said Director Zach Snyder referring to Goyer and producer Christopher Nolan.
Within the featurette the makers also discussed Superman’s look. They decided the cape was a must, but the underwear was not a necessity.
"I probably looked at hundreds of versions with underwear. It fell by the boards because I couldn't make it consistent with the world that we were creating," explained Snyder. He mentioned that the original Superman was given underwear because it that was the look of Victorian-era strongmen.
One of the most important parts of Superman is the “S” on his chest. According to the makers of the flim, the thought process surrounding the “S” was much more in depth than the fact the word “Superman” starts with the letter “S”.
“The Superman ‘S’ is said to be the second most recognizable symbol on the planet other than the Christian cross,” said Snyder. While researching for the film, the makers looked into medieval symbols and representations to get a feel for how the “S” or “shield” should look.
“Man of Steel” opens June 14. It stars Henry Cavill, Amy Adams, Michael Shannon and Russell Crowe among others.
