The Diffusion Group has released a report showing the growing viewership of TV shows and movies on Netflix.
Streaming volume data released by the online streaming service shows that subscribers around the world watch an average of over 90 minutes of video every day, according to GigaOm.
The growth began in January 2012, when Netflix reported that subscribers watched two billion streaming hours in the previous quarter. This number equals just under an hour of average viewing time per day. However, the number would increase to seven billion hours in the second quarter of 2014, which translates to 93 minutes of average viewing time per day.
Cable companies, which view Netflix as their biggest competition, have started to develop their own on-demand and online platforms to provide more content and attract binge watchers that are drawn to online streaming services, reported The Consumerist.
The report comes at a time when Netflix is experiencing an increase in the amount of bandwidth consumed by subscribers. The company's ISP speed index shows that movies are streamed in the U.S. at an average speed of 2.57 mbps, resulting in 1 GB of data being consumed in each hour streamed, which translates to 45 GB of data being used each month, GigaOm reported.
Another gain Netflix is seeing is in more subscribers from other countries as it continues to expand it service internationally. While U.S. subscribers made up 94 percent of the company's streaming hours in the third quarter of 2011, that ratio fell down to 72 percent in the second quarter of 2014. Netflix recently made its service available in France and Germany, which poses a great chance of U.S. subscribers making up an even smaller percentage of average streaming hours.
