No. 12 Georgia heads into Saturday's game with a 2-1 record after routing Troy last week, 66-0. The Bulldogs' 38-35 loss at South Carolina two weeks ago, though, could come back to haunt them and is proof Georgia still has some kinks to work out on defense.
"There were a couple mistakes that could have been critical errors that we kind of got away with, so we're still not 100 percent on getting lined up right," Georgia coach Mark Richt said of his pass defense, via ESPN. "But we're getting a lot better. The communication is getting a lot better, and we're still playing a lot of guys. So there's still a big learning curve back there, but I do feel like we're getting better."
Richt still doesn't believe the one loss to the Gamecocks will be the undoing of his team's season, but he did admit another loss could put an end to their postseason hopes.
"It still looks wide open to me," he said. "Now, if we don't win Saturday, it won't be very wide open for us. But I think everybody feels that way. I doubt anything will be settled until there are maybe one or two games to go."
Tennessee, meanwhile, opened the season with two straight wins before losing at Oklahoma last week, 34-10. It's a solid start for a program still rebuilding under second-year coach Butch Jones, whom the current stretch of the schedule has running through multiple SEC teams.
"Our young football team is going to find out what life is in the SEC with the grind that we are about to embark on," said Jones.
