Bar For Pregnant Women: NYC Location Targeting Soon-to-Be Moms Silly Ploy or Real Deal?

Could New York City become the first place to have a bar catered to pregnant women? An East Village location is raising a few eyebrows and ruffling some feathers with advertisement claiming that it will soon be a bar for expectant mothers.

The name "Gestations" is splashed across the building - located on Avenue A at 5th Street - with a bright pink banner that features a heavily-pregnant woman holding an open bottle of wine.

"Gestations is the premiere bar for pregnant women to drink without being judged," the site boasts on their Facebook page.

In fact, the entire page is littered with obnoxious posts urging mommies-to-be to check out the bar once it opens.

"#gestationsny will have free pregnancy test kit when you buy a pitcher. Check out our profile on #BARTENDr to see what else we'll carry," one status reads.

"We're so excited to announce our first trimester! Gestations is NYC's first bar that lets you drink for two," another says followed by, "The bigger the belly, the more you drink. True for men and pregnant women. #gesttationsny."

While some people have already dismissed the bar as a ploy for publicity, others find the supposed stunt to be tasteless.

"You are promoting actions that are dangerous to the health of an unborn child. Unfortunately, many babies are born with Fetal Alcohol Syndrome that produces learning and behavior disabilities as well as physical ones as well," one Facebook user commented. "Everyone know, that excessive drinking is equal to using drugs while pregnant. WHY would you promote this kind of behavior, and I hope that this is a joke?"

According to CBS, the bar has not obtained a liquor license and WCBS 880's Alex Silverman said a phone call to the bar's main number hints that it's nothing more than a joke. After a few rings, a message reads: "Try our nine-month happy hour because now you're drinking for two."

It also encourages people to stop by the location on Oct. 25.
