In a tragic incident, two skydivers died after crashing into a building in Massachusetts, police said.
The tandem jumpers, an instructor and a student, collided into a garage on Race Lane in Marstons Mills as they overshot their landing area at the Cape Cod Airfield, authorities said. The victims were both adult males, according to the Massachusetts State Police.
The incident occurred at about 5:30 p.m., according to the reports.
The names of the deceased, who died Sunday night, were not released, reports the Associated Press.
"We responded to the scene and we observed two people - the instructor and the student - laying on the ground beside the garage," Barnstable Police Sgt. Ben Baxter said, reports CBS Boston. "It appears they did hit the garage."
"It is very sad," Barnstable Police Sergeant David Myett said. "But we don't have many details."
The skydivers were taken to Cape Cod Hospital where they were pronounced dead. Sgt. David Myett told the Boston Globe that it was immediately clear the equipment of the skydivers malfunctioned. He said the district attorney's office will investigate their deaths.
The Federal Aviation Administration is also investigating the case.
The Cape Cod airfield sees a lot of tandem jumpers and such accidents are a rarity. According to the neighbors, the lot of skydivers come at the airfield. One person living close by said she saw the two men parachuting, but then heard a frightening sound, reports WBZ-TV. "Unfortunately I don't know what happened, but I heard a thud," the neighbor said. "The parachute looked deployed."
