American media outlets are claiming the "Hands Up! Don't Shoot!" slogan used during the Hong Kong protests was taken from the protests in Ferguson, Mo.
Although they are the same slogan, the internet in China is censored and many say they never heard of Ferguson.
"We have our hands up for showing both the police and media that we have no weapons in our hands," Icy Ng, a 22-year-old design student at Hong Kong Polytechnic University, tells Quartz, adding that she never heard of the Ferguson protests.
The two protests are also raising their hands for different reasons.
"Hong Kong protesters are peaceful, unarmed and mild," Ellie Ng tells Quartz, explaining why they are raising their hands during the protest.
In Ferguson, hands up, don't shoot was a sign of surrender to police after an officer shot and killed 18-year-old Michael Brown, reported USA Today.
