Hamster Family Rescued By Washington Firefighters

Firefighters pull people out of burning building and retrieve cats from trees. They also come equipped to save even the tiniest of living creatures from a burning blaze.

A family of hamsters owes their lives to the brave firefighters of Lacey Department District 3 in Lacey, Washington. The firefighters responded to a call at a mobile home where a small fire had broken out on Sept. 26. They found the hamsters inside their cage after extinguishing the flames.

The firefighters immediately started life saving efforts using tiny rodent-sized oxygen masks and addressing their "Pet Emergency Pocket Guide."

"Yes. Our crews are trained and specially equipped to care for animals that have been rescued from a house fire," the Lacey Fire Department tweeted. The department tweeted from the scene for the whole incident.

The firefighters couldn't save all of the small baby hamsters. They found two adults, named Oreo and Madonna, and three baby hamsters, but one didn't make it.

The firefighters attributed the small house fire to the clothes dryer in the laundry room, according to a preliminary investigation. The department had tweeted a week before about cleaning out dryer lint screens.

"Keep it clean! Remember to always clean that lint screen after every load. Also, turn the dryer off if you leave the house or go to sleep," the department tweeted.

Lacey is a suburb of Washington state capital Olympia and about 60 miles south of Seattle.
