Michael Phelps Arrested For DUI

Olympic superstar and 18-time gold medalist Michael Phelps was reportedly arrested for driving under the influence Monday night, potentially throwing a wrench into his bid to return to Olympic competition after retiring in the wake of the 2012 Summer Olympics in London.

It was reported by TMZ and confirmed by NBC 4 in Washington, D.C. that Phelps was pulled over in Baltimore, Maryland for going 84 mph in a 45 mph zone. He also supposedly had a blood-alcohol content that was twice the legal limit.

"Phelps was identified as the driver by his driver's license and appeared to be under the influence. He was unable to perform satisfactorily a series of standard field sobriety tests," according to the Maryland Transportation Authority police.

Police also said that "Phelps was speeding excessively and crossing double lane lines," on I-95 in Baltimore.

This is Phelps' second DUI arrest. He was originally arrested back in 2004 when he was 19 years old.

Phelps was also the center of controversy when a photograph leaked in 2009 that depicted him smoking marijuana from a pipe.

Phelps was hoping to return for the 2016 Summer Games in Rio de Janeiro.

There is no word yet on how the arrest will affect his Olympic aspirations going forward.

It will no doubt affect his standing with sponsors and his big-money endorsement deals.
