Carnival Cruise: Man Plunges To Death From Ship Mast

A cruise ended terribly wrong for a 20-year-old man who apparently accidentally plunged to his death after climbing to the front mast of the ship.

The North Carolina man, whose name was not yet released, fell two tiers (about 20 feet) before crashing onto the deck. The medical team from the Carnival Cruise ship aided the man until Miami and Miami-Dade Fire Rescue arrived and brought him to the Jackson Memorial Hospital's Ryder Trauma Center, where he was pronounced dead later in the day, the Miami Herald reported.

The ship was on its way back to Miami after finishing its Caribbean itinerary.

The mast is a restricted area with posted signs warning passengers not to enter, Jennifer de la Cruz, Carnival Cruise's vice president told Miami Herald.

"Our thoughts and prayers are with his family and loved ones at this difficult time," de la Cruz said in a statement from Carnival Cruise.

Miami-Dade's Homicide Bureau is still investigating the incident.
