Secret Service Director Julia Pierson resigned today after multiple White House security breaches occurred under her management.
Department of Homeland Security Secretary's Jeh Johnson announced her resignation:
"Today Julia Pierson, the Director of the United States Secret Service, offered her resignation, and I accepted it. I salute her 30 years of distinguished service to the Secret Service and the Nation," Johnson said in a statement. "As an interim Acting Director of the Secret Service, I am appointing Joseph Clancy, formerly Special Agent in Charge of the Presidential Protective Division of the Secret Service. Mr. Clancy retired from the Secret Service in 2011. I appreciate his willingness to leave his position in the private sector on very short notice and return to public service for a period."
Pierson apologized yesterday for the security plan at the White House. However, lawmakers didn't appear to accept her apology, pointing out several instances the Secret Service were faulty while protecting the president and that much of the information released by the agency appears misleading, according to CBS News reports.
The ex-director of the Secret Service was facing bipartisan pressure to step down from her position in recent days.
Tuesday Pierson took full responsibility for the highest-profile breach last month where an intruder jumped the White House fence with a knife and wasn't stopped until he reached the East Room.
A few days before that, on Sept. 16, an armed security contractor, who was previously arrested for assault, rode on an elevator with President Obama.
