Bomb Threat Forces Evacuation At Sandy Hook Elementary School, Authorities Investigating

Sandy Hook Elementary School experienced another scare after receiving a bomb threat Wednesday morning, forcing authorities to evacuate students, including many who lived through the 2012 massacre, out of the building, the Associated Press reported. An investigation into the threat is ongoing, police said.

"All students and staff are safe," Newtown First Selectman E. Patricia Llodra said in a written statement. "The building and grounds will be thoroughly searched and cleared of any concern."

Located on Far Hill Road, in Connecticut, the school received the threatening call just after 9:30 a.m. Classes were immediately dismissed early, and students were moved to a neighboring school in Monroe where parents could pick them up, according to Nancy Bartosik of the Monroe superintendent's office.

The school building and surrounding grounds were searched by Newtown police, along with Monroe police, but no evidence of threat was located by authorities, according to Monroe Police Lt. Brian McCauley, who added that the evacuation was ordered as a precaution.

Connecticut state police also sent their bomb squad to assist in the investigation, reported CBS News senior investigative producer Pat Milton.

Parents were notified through an automated phone call, including a message informing them about the threat and telling them that they will be kept up to date on any developments.

"All students and all staff are absolutely 100 percent safe. Sandy hook will dismiss at noontime because of a low to no threat scare," Newtown Superintendent of Schools Joseph V. Erardi Jr. said in a voicemail sent to parents.

A single gunman, Adam Lanza, killed 20 first-grade students and six educators at the Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown on Dec. 14, 2012. Lanza also shot his mother in their Newtown home before going on the rampage and then committing suicide.

"After the shootings, students enrolled at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown began taking classes at a school in the neighboring town of Monroe, also called Sandy Hook Elementary. The original school building was torn down last year," according to the AP.
