Jo-Wilfried Tsonga delivered a major upset in the 2013 French Open quarterfinals by defeating No. 2 seed Roger Federer. David Ferrer and Serena Williams also had wins on Tuesday, both advancing to the semifinals as well.
No. 6 seed Tsonga played well in the match and defeated Federer in three sets ̶ 7-5, 6-3, 6-3, BBC reports. It's one of the bigger upsets of the tournament, with Federer's streak of 34 Grand Slam semifinals coming to an end.
The defeat is even more shocking in that Federer was 9-3 in his career against Tsonga. Federer had struggled in his fourth round win over Gilles Simon, but Tsonga's victory is still surprising ̶ Federer was predicted to at least make it to the next round.
Tsonga, 28, now faces David Ferrer in the semifinals.
Ferrer earned his spot in the semifinals with a 6-2, 6-1, 6-1 three-set win over Tommy Robredo on Tuesday.
Serena Williams also won on Tuesday against Svetlana Kuznetsova, having to rally to a 6-1, 3-6, 6-3 win. Her win adds to her impressive streak as she once again makes it to the French Open semifinals.
Rafael Nadal, Novak Djokovic and Maria Sharapova all play on Wednesday in the last bout of the quarterfinals.
