Denver Broncos quarterback Peyton Manning is just one touchdown away from joining the elusive 500 club. If Manning can score a touchdown on Sunday against the Arizona Cardinals, he will move within just eight touchdowns of tying Brett Favre's record.
Manning is on the cusp of another major record. With one more touchdown on Sunday, he'll become just the second quarterback ever to throw for at least 500 touchdowns. Manning, of course, was nonchalant about possibly reaching the milestone and deflected the praise to his teammates and coaches, both past and present.
"When asked about it, obviously just trying to win this football game, but when asked about it, I have reflected on the great teammates and coaches that I've been with along the way, who have been a part of that," Manning said, via ESPN. "You don't throw that many touchdowns without a lot of help. I guess I think about just how grateful I am to have played with some great teammates at all positions ... excellent coaching. I'll always be grateful for that."
Manning, who threw a record 55 scores last season, is almost certain to top Favre's standing record of 508 career touchdown passes.
While it would be a historical accomplishment, it's not the individual statistic that matters most to him.
"I think you always look at your touchdown-to-interception [ratio] every single year," Manning said. "... Touchdowns high, interceptions low, it means you're getting your team in the end zone and you're protecting the ball. That particular statistic usually leads to winning football games."
Manning has 499 touchdowns to 220 interceptions for a ratio of 2.2 touchdowns to every pick.
