“Game of Thrones” stars Natalie Dormer and Lena Headey have joined the “Because I am a Girl” campaign for Plan UK to help end female genital mutilation (FGM) and child marriage in poorer communities in the world.
The Daily Mail reports 130 millions girls and women in the world living with the results of FGM.
“It fills me with hope that someday soon girls can grow up on a world that is free from these harmful practices,” Headey, who plays Cersei Lannister, told the Daily Mail. “I urge everyone – men, boys, women and girls – to join me in standing up for girls’ rights’ with Plan UK.”
Dormer, who takes on the role of Margarey Tyrell in "Game of Thrones," added, “I believe we all have a part to play in the fight to end abuses like FGM and child marriage. It’s a powerful stance that we’re all taking, and by uniting together we can help keep millions of girls safe from harm.”
The “Because I am a Girl” campaign is working on raising awareness the effects of FGM and child marriage on young women. The campaign is asking the public to “put pressure on governments and decision makers” to give these young girls rights, according to the campaign's official website.
“At the Girl Summit in June this year, the UK government declared its commitment to ending child marriage and FGM in a generation. Adding your face to our campaign will show the public is right behind this pledge – and ensure politicians continue to prioritize this vital work,” Plan UK CEO Tanya Barron said in a statement.
