Robert Griffin III may be very talented, but he's also proved to be very injury-prone in his short NFL career. After Griffin dislocated his ankle in Week 2, many thought his season was done. But as it was a non-contact dislocation, Griffin was fortunate enough to avoid any fractures and was given a timetable of roughly eight weeks until he could return. NFL Network's Ian Rapoport thinks fans could see Griffin return as soon as three weeks from now.
Backup quarterback Kirk Cousins has been up and done while filling in for Griffin. Cousins has completed 62% of his passes for 934 yards, six touchdowns and five interceptions. Four of those picks came against the New York Giants last week in a blowout loss.
Both Cousins and Griffin have generated a mix of praise and criticism for their performances through two-plus seasons. The Washington Redskins are eager to get Griffin back in order to continue to evaluate his long term potential. However, ProFootballTalk.com's Mike Florio doesn't think Rapoport's report is accurate.
"In response to a report from NFL Media that Griffin plans to return from a dislocated ankle in three weeks, a source with knowledge of the situation tells PFT that it's too early to tell when Griffin will make his return," Florio wrote.
"Griffin is indeed ahead of schedule (isn't every injured player?), but the challenge with Griffin will be to ensure that he won't risk re-injury, and that he'll have maximum effectiveness. In 2013, he wasn't ready to return from a torn ACL - and it showed. All year long."
If Griffin were to return in Week 8, he would be forced to play twice in six days due to a Monday night game at Dallas. The Redskins have their bye in Week 10, perhaps making it safer for Griffin to return in Week 11 against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
The Redskins (1-3) face off against the Seattle Seahawks (2-1) tonight.
