A Detroit man lost his feet and hands when he was mauled by a pack of dogs after they escaped from a home on the east side of the city, Detroit Free Press reported on Friday.
Three officers shot at the dogs several times after they responded to the scene, killing at least one of them in the process at about 10:10 p.m. The other dogs were lured inside the home by officers and locked inside.
The owner of the home where the dogs escaped away from was away at the time of the attack, but he was later apprehended by police on Friday. There were a total of 12 dogs, including four puppies, inside the home.
The man had damage to both arms below the elbows, Detroit Police spokesman Sgt. Michael Woody said. He was found naked lying in a yard by paramedics after the incident, according to The Daily Mail.
Woody said it was unclear why the man was naked on the property and that the dogs' owner is not thought to be involved in dog fighting. A formal investigation is continuing.
"The man was kind of pinned down ... that's why they had to do what they had to do, because his life was in jeopardy," Woody told the Detroit Free Press, adding that "the officers very tactfully tried to draw the dogs away to get to the man and had to shoot one."
