Showtime will deliver the "Twin Peaks" revival that fans have waited almost 25 years to happen. ABC cut short the cult classic series after only two seasons on the air in the early '90s.
Co-creators Mark Frost and David Lynch will start production next year and the cable network will premiere the nine-episode series in 2016, according to Deadline. Frost and Lynch will write and produce every episode and Lynch will handle all director responsibilities.
"Dear Twitter Friends... it is happening again. #damngoodcoffee," the co-creators both tweeted on Oct. 5 with a teaser video attached.
"Twin Peaks" ended on a cliffhanger in 1991 as an attempt to save the show from cancellation. FBI Agent Dale Cooper (Kyle MacLachlan) became possessed by demonic rapist. Lynch shot a "Twin Peaks" movie a year later, but it took place before the events of the TV series.
"What more can I say - TWIN PEAKS with David Lynch and Mark Frost on SHOWTIME in 2016!" Showtime president David Nevins said in the network's announcement. "To quote Agent Cooper, 'I have no idea where this will lead us, but I have a definite feeling it will be a place both wonderful and strange.'"
The reboot will start in the present day, and Frost doesn't consider it a third season. "It is not a remake. The story continues. The seeds of where we go were planted where we've been," Frost told TVLine.
The show runners only approached Showtime about the new project, according to Frost. He and Lynch decided to revisit their beloved series three years ago at a lunch, and took it to their former ABC representative Gary Levine who now works for Showtime president David Nevins.
MacLachlan may return to the series, but no casting announcements have been made. Showtime will also re-air the first two seasons of "Twin Peaks" before the new series premieres.
Frost and Lynch sparked fans' curiosity last week when they both tweeted within seconds of each other the same exact tweet. "Dear Twitter Friends: That gum you like is going to come back in style. #damngoodcoffee," the tweet read.
