New York City Teacher Asks Wife To Call In Bomb Threat To End Boring Meeting

A teacher at a New York City charter school may face disciplinary action after his wife called in a bomb threat during a staff meeting after he texted her asking her to do so as a joke, EAG News reported on Monday.

Identified only as Eric, he allegedly sent a text to his his wife asking her to "call in a bomb threat" during Renaissance Charter High School's dry morning staff meeting last week. He followed up with a "haha," but his wife didn't see the message until after she called in the threat to police. The school shares a building with three other charter schools, according to police.

The woman quickly called back when she realized her husband was joking, but eight officers went to look into the report anyway and arrived at the school around 9:50 a.m., according to the New York Post. Police questioned Eric for a while, but didn't search the school or arrest him.

School executive director, Stephen Falla Riff, said administrators hadn't heard anything about a bomb threat before police came to the school and were taken by surprise. Staff called students' homes to explain to their parents that the bomb threat was a hoax.

"The NYPD was satisfied it was a joke," Falla Riff said, according to The Daily Mail. "If they thought there was any doubt whatsoever, my guess is that he would be in cuffs right now."

Whether or not Eric will be reprimanded is expected to be decided on Monday.
