Superstar Carrie Underwood has achieved numerous firsts and earned a stadium full of awards during her chart-topping career. Now she's making history again with her compelling new song, "Something in the Water." The single about baptism and Godly salvation racked up the highest first-week sales of her career, and the song achieved the best opening-week sales of any female country artist in 2014.
"Something in the Water" is the first single from her Dec. 9 album release, "Greatest Hits: Decade #1."
Underwood has gone full circle to cap a decade of hits with her current faith-inspired song. It's already been almost ten years since the country star exploded onto the music scene with her winning appearance on "American Idol" in 2005 and her first big hit, "Jesus Take the Wheel," reports christiantoday.com.
That song was all about a desperate mother's cry to Jesus to take control of her car and her life as they both spin dangerously out of control. The song spent six weeks at No.1 and earned Underwood a Grammy.
Although a Christian, the country star has tended to take the subtle approach in expressing of her faith. Her music focuses largely on relationships and life through a lens anyone can relate to. But she's laid her faith out for everyone to see in "Something in the Water," notes christiantoday.com.
The song was co-written with Chris DeStefano and Brett James, and takes a leaf out of the "Jesus Take the Wheel" book in being about the power of faith to see people through difficult times
In the powerful song, Underwood, according to directlyrics.com, sings:
I was all out of hoping, all out of fight
Couldn't fight back my tears so I fell on my knees
Saying God if you're there come and rescue me
Felt love pouring down from above
Got washed in the water, washed in the blood and now I'm changed
Underwood described the song to NBC's Today show as a "joyous, uplifting song about changing your life for the better and waking up and having that a-ha moment and your life being different from that moment forward."
The singer didn't hide her joy about getting the song out to the public. The day it was released, she tweeted: "Just heard #SomethingInTheWater for the first time on the radio! Yay! So happy happy happy!!!" according to eonline.com.
Named last week's USA Today Song of the Week, the publication praised "Something in the Water," lauding the song's production and "the purity" of Underwood's vocals.
Underwood emerged from the promise of her 2005 "American Idol" win to become a true multi-format, multi-media superstar, spanning achievements in music, television, and film, where the six-time Grammy Award winner has amassed more than 95 major honors, sold more than 64 million records worldwide, and recorded 18 No. 1 singles, nine of which she co-wrote, according to schmidtrelations.com.
Last year, she starred as Maria von Trapp in NBC's three-hour holiday blockbuster, the Emmy-winning "The Sound of Music Live!," whose airings attracted 44 million viewers.
