Mobile Devices Outnumber Human Beings, Data Shows

Data from mobile analysis company GSMA Intelligence shows the increasing connection that people have with their phones and laptops, as humans are currently outnumbered by mobile devices.

The firm's active mobile connections counter shows that there are currently over 7.2 billion SIM cards operating across the globe, while data from the U.S. Census Bureau states that there are just under 7.2 billion people on Earth, according to CNET.

The amount of SIM cards being used right now continues to catapult. The rate is five times faster than the growth of the human population, which is increasing by about two people per second (1.2 people per year).

Despite the world being filled with more active SIMS than people, less than half of the global population has a subscription to a mobile device, which means everyone in the world could get their hands on a phone or tablet, CNET reported.

Another influence in the exceeding number of mobile gadgets is the amount of active machine-to-machine (M2M) connections out there, which is estimated to be a quarter of a billion. People have these connections so they can use their mobile devices with cars, smart utility meters, medical appliances, delivery packages and other things.

Kevin Kimberlin, Chairman of Spencer Trask & Co., said the mobile phone has had a greater impact on humans than any other gadget, CNET reported. Spencer Trask's past activities include investing in Millicom, a startup that is working with Facebook and other tech giants on making mobile connections available in developing countries.

"It's the fastest growing manmade phenomenon ever- from zero to 7.2 billion in three decades," Kimberlin said.
