Buzz Bissinger, a former high school football player, writer of "Friday Night Lights" and semi-popular national journalist, really doesn't like Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Nick Foles.
Bissinger went on the 94WIP radio show on Monday morning to rip on Foles saying that, in his estimation, Foles is not a Super Bowl-winning quarterback.
"[Foles] is a nice kid. He does have physical toughness. But if we think we are seeing a Super Bowl-caliber quarterback, we're out of our minds...you know the NFL is inconsistent, but do you really think it's going to get better with the way he's playing?"
This is not the first time Bissinger has made this assertion.
In July, Bissinger requested an interview with Foles for a cover story he was writing on the enigmatic quarterback for Philadelphia Magazine.
Foles declined.
Bissinger's response was to call Foles "chickens---," among a variety of other descriptive terms, and dubbed him unworthy of the mantel of Philadelphia Eagle signal-caller.
"Particularly since Foles is the New Face of Philadelphia Sports in a sports-mad town, the newest promise to the Promised Land in the post-Donovan McNabb era. Is he capable of leading the Eagles to the Super Bowl one day? Was the 2013 season aberrant? How will he handle the pressure? Fans need to try to figure out what ticks inside him to remotely know any of the answers."
If that wasn't enough of an insult, Bissinger really dug the knife in when he went on to insult Foles' appearance, in addition to his skills as a quarterback.
"Instead, what has emerged is a one-dimensional choirboy caricature reflective of a player and a team and a league terrified of individuality. Foles is selling himself, and being sold by the born-again Eagles, as the anti-DeSean: contrite, non-charismatic, cautious, churchgoing, Caucasian. The perfect poster boy for Eagles owner Jeffrey Lurie and commissioner Roger Goodell's vision of a new NFL theme park where players have no discernible personality and the Twitter account is laced with Glories to God."
On Monday, a day after the Eagles barely escaped with a victory over the visiting St. Louis Rams, moving their record to 4-1 and maintaining the top spot in the NFC East, Bissinger continued to harangue Foles, saying he doesn't possess the right personality for an NFL quarterback.
"[Foles] has got a timid personality, and anyone who thinks that does not spill over into how you play the game is ridiculous...when [Riley] Cooper drops that pass early in the game, a quarterback should get in his face and say, 'You know, you have to make those plays!' and not be milquetoast about it. He will not do that."
Bissinger also wanted Foles and the radio show's listeners to know that the quarterback blew his chance to be interviewed by "one of the greatest journalists of the country."
But now? Not a chance in hell.
