Man, Daughter Found Dead 80 Miles Apart In Possible Murder-Suicide

A man and his daughter were found dead 80 miles apart in Michigan, and police now suspect the deaths were caused by a murder - suicide, The Detroit Free Press reported on Tuesday.

Police are looking into the recent deaths of Gary Volkers, 59, and Stacey Grotenhuis, 31. Volkers' body was discovered Sunday in his car in LeRoy Township and evidence collected at the scene directed investigators to his condo in Holland Township, where Grotenhuis' body was found.

Michigan State Police can say with certainty that Grotenhuis was murdered, but the cause of her father's death is still under investigation. It is not believed that anyone else is involved and police are not searching for any other suspects.

Police have not revealed a possible motive or any information about possible weapons found at the scenes. There was also no sign of a struggle inside Volkers' condo. Grotenhuis had recently moved in with her father.

Police investigators poured over the condo on Monday and searched the complex's garage, along with a safe inside the garage.

A neighbor of the father and daughter said she barely knew them, but was home all Sunday night and didn't hear anything suspicious, according to Wood TV.

Deb Anderson, who lived next door, told the Detroit Free Press that she never heard any fighting or arguing between the two; in fact, they seemed affectionate. Anderson said she would say hello to them as they came and went, but that was the extent of their interaction.

The woman said she can't imagine why anyone would kill their daughter.

"How somebody could do that -- it's beyond me," she said. "It's very hard, very difficult."
