Yahoo is reportedly cutting over 400 jobs at its office in Bangalore, India, but some of these employees still have a chance to work.
An unnamed source said that the Sunnyvale, California-based internet giant is offering employment opportunities in the U.S. to 40 percent of the workers affected by the layoffs, according to Bloomberg. The source added that Marissa Mayer, CEO of Yahoo, is looking to bring employees closer together so that the company can come out with better products.
The person asked to remain anonymous because the details about the layoffs have not been publicly revealed yet.
"As we ensure that Yahoo is on a path of sustainable growth, we're looking at ways to achieve greater efficiency, collaboration and innovation across our business," Yahoo said in an email. "We're making some changes to the way we operate in Bangalore leading to consolidation of certain teams into fewer offices. Yahoo will continue to have a presence in India and Bangalore remains an important office."
About 1,000 people are currently working at Yahoo's Bangalore office, The San Jose Mercury News reported.
The move would serve as Mayer's latest attempt at improving Yahoo's operations since joining the company two years ago. She said that she was "not satisfied" with the results of Yahoo's second-quarter earnings, as the company made $1.08 billion in revenue for the three months ended in June, which is 4 percent less than the previous year.
The report also comes at a time when Yahoo is looking to improve its advertising for displays, according to The San Jose Mercury News. The company made $436 million in display revenue in the second quarter of 2014, which is 8 percent less than last year.
Yahoo has also recently received advice about improving its advertising business from activist investor Starboard Value LP, Bloomberg reported. The suggestion was to stop buying companies and, instead, look into splitting up its business and merging with AOL Inc.
