Samsung has officially announced another companion to its popular new flagship phone, the Galaxy S4. Coming off of the announcement of the Galaxy S4 Mini, fans of the smartphone can now look forward to the Galaxy S4 Active, the rugged dust and waterproof version of the handset.
The new phone is perfect for those who want all of the luxury of a smartphone without the huge price tag consequence of dropping it on the job, forgetting it in one's pocket before diving into the water or letting it go for a tumble down a dirt hill. The handset boasts IP67 dust and water resistance and can reportedly be submerged in a meter of water for up to 30 minutes. It dares its owner to get a little rough with it by offering an 8MP underwater camera, a downgrade from the standard version's 13MP non-waterproof camera, and a water-resistant earphone jack.
The phone sports most of the same specifications as the standard version of the Galaxy S4 including a 5-inch full HD display, 1.9GHz quad-core processor, 2GB of RAM, 16GB of internal storage, front facing camera and a 2600mAh battery. It too will run on the Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean operating system.
Despite the official announcement by the company, it is unclear exactly when the Samsung Galaxy S4 Active will be available for purchase. All that is known is that it will be sometime this summer. It is likely that a more in-depth unveiling of the phone will take place at their June 20 press event in London.
Rumors about the Galaxy S4 Active started yesterday when a picture of the new device was leaked with a date on the home screen that said "June 21." Pairing off of the phone's official release and the leaked picture, many believe that the new phone will be available the day after Samsung discusses it in London.
