“Assassin’s Creed: Unity” World Level Design Director Nicolas Guérin claims 30 fps is a much better resolution than 60 fps to run on both PS4 and Xbox One.
During an interview with TechRadar, Guérin explained the decision to run the game at 30 fps was to give the title a “cinematic” look with smooth performance. Guérin claimed it was not an easy task for developers.
"At Ubisoft for a long time we wanted to push 60 fps. I don't think it was a good idea because you don't gain that much from 60 fps and it doesn't look like the real thing. It's a bit like The Hobbit movie, it looked really weird,” Guérin told TechRadar.
"And in other games it's the same - like the Rachet and Clank series [where it was dropped]. So I think collectively in the video game industry we're dropping that standard because it's hard to achieve, it's twice as hard as 30fps, and its not really that great in terms of rendering quality of the picture and the image."
Both next-gen consoles are set to run at 900p/30fps, but gamers will have to wait until Nov. 11 to test out the performance of the title. Players can also look forward to “Assassin’s Creed: Unity” going back to its roots for inspiration.
Creative Director Alex Amancio recently told IGN developers went back to the original “Assassin’s Creed” title when it comes to the way players will get to know their targets.
“The first Assassin's Creed was designed to provide a tremendous level of exposition for each Assassination target. This gave players the opportunity to get to know the mark and witness their crimes before the actual deed,” Amancio said.
“…We have since strayed from this concept and as a result, targets have become much more forgettable. ACU goes back to the idea of trying to make each and every assassination target an iconic character.”
