Nearly 1 million bees killed one landscaper and critically injured another on Wednesday after they were attacked by the swarm in southern Arizona, ABC News reported.
The landscapers were working on a home near the Mexican border when the swarm of bees descended on them. One of the two men died later at a nearby hospital. The names of the victims have not been released.
The organization the landscapers worked for assists adults with developmental disabilities, according to the New York Daily News.
The 32-year-old man who died was covered by bees on his face and neck, leading to cardiac arrest. The other man was stung more than 100 times. He has since been treated and released.
The 90-year-old homeowner was present, but did not get stung.
Emergency crews went to the house and assisted in exterminating a hive that was found in the attic. The hive was home to between 300,000 and 800,000 bees, according to Police Capt. Ray Luzania.
"The hive was in the eaves of the house and spread into the attic. The hive was 4 feet wide and 6 feet long," Luzania said, according to the Arizona Daily Star.
