A long-lost time capsule that was sealed 100 years ago was finally opened Wednesday in New York City.
Members of the New-York Historical Society, art handlers and time capsule experts waited with bated breath as the lid of the bronze chest was lifted to reveal the artifacts- including old books, letters and a telegram from New York's then governor- that were placed inside by a group of Manhattan businessmen in 1914, The New York Times reported.
"The very concept of a time capsule- a cache of materials that helps future generations understand the past- goes to the heart of the New-York Historical Society's mission," society president Louise Mirrer said according to the newspaper.
Also on Wednesday, the society's high school interns presented items for their own time capsule to be sealed and opened in 2114, including a MetroCard, an Occupy Wall Street pin, and a Lady Gaga concert ticket.
