Georgia announced Thursday that it had suspended star running back and Heisman candidate Todd Gurley indefinitely while an investigation into alleged rules violations is underway.
The "NCAA investigation centers around whether Gurley was given money for autographs, memorabilia or the use of his likeness," according to ESPN sources. This report has not been confirmed by the university.
Sources claim that Gurley was attempting to charge between $8 and $25 per signature, charging less to autograph dealers if he signed in bulk. James Spence Authentication, a respected autograph authentication company, has noted roughly 500 items with Gurley's signature to be authentic.
"I'm obviously very disappointed," Georgia coach Mark Richt said in a statement. "The important thing for our team is to turn all our attention toward preparation for Missouri."
Missouri (4-1) is currently ranked No. 23 in the nation. The No. 13 Bulldogs need a victory in this important Eastern Division game to remain in the playoff picture. Gurley currently leads the SEC in rushing with 773 yards and has scored eight touchdowns. The junior rusher is one of the leading candidates in this season's Heisman Trophy campaign.
Freshman Nick Chubb will likely replace Gurley in the starting lineup. Chubb ranks second on the Bulldogs with 234 rushing yards, and has scored three total touchdowns this season. As a team, Georgia ranks second in the nation in rushing yards per game with 289. The Bulldogs have run the ball at least 35 times in every game this year.
