Tesla's 'D' Model Revealed to Be New Model S With Autopilot

Tesla Motors introduced its highly anticipated "D" model Thursday night at a Los Angeles event, which came in the form of a new Model S with all-wheel drive.

The updated Model S serves as one of the new cars that Elon Musk, CEO of the electric car maker, says has been made over the last two weeks that comes with new sensor hardware to provide an Autopilot system, according to CNET.

The hardware comes with radar that looks forward, a camera and ultrasonic sensors. A smaller motor was added for driving the front wheels.

The new vehicle, called the P85D, serves as a new and improved version of the Model S "performance model" (P85), PC Magazine reported. The autopilot technology turned out to be the "something else" that Musk was talking about when he previewed the event.

The 12 sensors in the Auto Pilot system give drivers a 306-degree view of everything around them, and they can see 16 feet in all directions. Musk also talked about the new car's speed, saying it can accelerate from zero to 60 miles per hour in 3.2 seconds.

"This car is nuts. It's like taking off from a carrier deck. It's just bananas. It's like having your own personal roller coaster," Musk said.

The CEO added that when drivers are on private property, they will have several abilities with the P85D, such as summoning it and setting a calendar so the car will meet them at a location of their choosing, CNET reported.

He said Tesla is looking to add over-the-air software updates to improve the car's all-wheel-drive features.

The P85D will come with three different driving settings, which are "normal," "sport," and "insane," PC Magazine reported.

Tesla has yet to reveal any information on the new Model S's price or where it will be available.
