After a black 18-year-old boy came home from school early, police stopped him from going in his house and pepper sprayed him because they thought he was a robber.
"They was like, 'Put your hands on the door,'" DeShawn Currie tells ABC 11. "I was like, 'For what? This is my house.' I was like, 'Why are y'all in here?'"
Police say they were responding to a call they got from a neighbor reporting a break-in.
DeShawn says the officers followed him inside his house and didn't believe his story, pointing to three pictures on the mantle of three white kids saying he doesn't belong there.
This hit a soft spot on the 18-year-old who is a foster child, which started an argument with police. The fighting ended when police pepper sprayed DeShawn.
Living with this new family is still new for DeShawn as they only fostered him a year ago. He confesses to ABC 11 that he chose this family with hopes for finally having security and love, but now he is questioning his decision.
Police released a statement saying they pepper sprayed DeShawn because he wasn't following instructions and he became threatening. They add in the statement that the neghborhood DeShawn was in has recently been experiencing criminal activity.
DeShawn and his parents met with the police department Tuesday, but no charges were filed.
