A five-year-old girl who was fed nothing but corn puffs her whole life was rescued by officials and getting help.
Florentina Balanescu, 5, weighed just 11-pounds, which is the same as a three-month-old baby, when officials rescued her from her home in Romania, reports Daily Mail.
Her parents Mihai Balanescu, 39, and Camelie Balanescu, 36, have only fed her corn puffs and water since she was born, causing her to become malnourished.
"It was really heartbreaking to see how tiny she was and to realize how much she had been neglected when she first came here," Oana Cobilita, Florentina's nurse, tells Daily Mail.
Colbilita is so determined to help Florentina to get better that she is fighting to adopt her and bringing the toddler with her every weekend to spend time with her family.
"I didn't want her to spend all her time in the hospital so I started taking her on trips and getting her to spend time with me and my family so she could experience a bit of normal life, and I realized that I wanted to continue caring for her and I started the process to adopt her," Colbilita tells Daily Mail.
The adoption procedures in Romania are very bureaucratic and the procedures are very strict, which appears to be keeping Colbilita from being granted guardianship of Florentina.
Social workers recently announced that Florentina, who is recovering, is going to be sent to a disabled orphanage 74-miles away from Colbilita.
Police are currently investigating Florentina's parents who made it clear to authorities that they don't want her back because they can't afford a child.
