Senator John Walsh Apologizes for Plagiarism, Loses His Degree

The Army War College stripped Senator John E. Walsh, a Democrat from Montana, of his master's degree. The college ruled that Walsh plagiarized his final paper in 2007, The New York Times reports.

Walsh withdrew from mid-term elections after The Times reported in July that large chunks of his graduate thesis had been copied. Walsh denied the allegations, according to the then-Times.

The retired National Guard colonel was notified by The Army War College on Oct. 10, according to the current Times. His name will also be removed from the campus' bronze plaque that lists graduates of the college.

"Though I disagree with the findings made by the War College, I accept its decision with great humility and respect for the U.S. military. I apologize to all Montanans for the plagiarism in my 2007 paper, and I am prepared to live with its consequences," Walsh said in a statement, according to the Times. Walsh has apologized for his actions, but he said he would not resign

Walsh was appointed in February to replace Senator Max Baucus, when Baucus was appointed U.S. Ambassador to China. Amanda Curtis replaced Walsh on the mid-term ballot.
