San Francisco drew first blood with a 3-0 win Saturday against St. Louis. Giants starting pitcher Madison Bumgarner pitched 7 2/3 scoreless innings of four-hit ball while tossing seven strikeouts. The performance also set a new postseason record, according to ESPN: 26 2/3 consecutive scoreless innings on the road.
"That's pretty cool," he said, via ESPN. "There's stats for everything nowadays. I've happened to have a little extra good luck on the road."
Giants pitcher Jake Peavy is tasked with following Bumgarner's performance. Peavy is 0-2 with a 9.88 ERA in three postseason starts against St. Louis, but he's coming off 5 2/3 scoreless innings in Friday's 3-2 win against Washington.
"I've got a lot of work ahead of me," said Peavy. "I think we have a good game plan set in place, and it's just going to come down to executing that and trying to get them to hit some balls at people."
Despite the poor numbers against St. Louis in the postseason, Peavy believes the experience he's since accumulated will make a different Sunday night.
"The more you do something the more comfortable you get in that situation," Peavy said. "Up until last year, I had never really gotten an opportunity to pitch with the knowledge that I have now. I try to take all that knowledge in with me, be under control. I'll be fiery. I will be emotional, but I will be under control."
He'll be opposed by Cardinals pitcher Lance Lynn, who's coming off a no-decision after giving up two earned runs on Saturday in a 3-2 loss at Los Angeles.
