A Utah elementary school teacher accidently fired a gun in the school bathroom, which sparked a debate on gun laws in schools once more.
In the state of Utah, those who have a concealed weapon license are premitted to carry guns in schools. Teachers also are not obligated to announce that they are carrying a weapon. Because of this law, it's unknown how many teachers and school officials carry guns to school.
Michelle Montgomery, 39, was in a bathroom stall when her gun accidently fired, reports The Associated Press. A bullet struck a toilet, causing it to explode. Fragments from the toilet flew in all directions, some of which came flying back at her. She was taken to a hospital by ambulence for medical treatment.
Montgomery was facing discipline by school officials for violating school policy, but she was not going to get fired, AP reports. She ended up not returning to her sixth grade classroom on her own terms, saying she got a new teaching job closer to home.
Although no one other than Montgomery saw the shooting or was injured by it, it's getting people in the area talking about guns in schools.
Utah Parents Against Gun Violence tells AP this shooting is exactly why they believe guns should not be allowed in schools.
Miriam Walkingshaw, co-founder of Utah Parents Against Violence, explains to AP that having guns around children is more risky than any bad situation a teacher is hoping to prevent by having the guns.
