University of Alabama backup tight end Kurt Freitag's dorm room - number 413 in Bryant Hall - is pretty much like any other college dorm room - a bed, a chair, some posters - except for a few very specific items that were discovered by police during a search conducted on October 7 after they initially observed and recorded some suspicious behavior.
Those items, which very well may spell the end of Freitag's short tenure as an Alabama football player, turned out to be 112 grams of marijuana and $4,661. Not bad for a college kid who's used to eating ramen noodles and dorm food.
Agents of the West Alabama Narcotics Task Force monitoring Freitag saw a drug transaction go down outside of Bryant Hall in Tuscaloosa last Tuesday, and were able to identify Freitag through a "confidential informant."
After the transaction, the agents made contact with Freitag, read him his Miranda rights in his room, and then proceeded to unearth the hidden drugs and money after he gave them permission to search through his things.
The police report does not indicate that Freitag was arrested or charged with a crime.
Freitag joined the Crimson Tide as part of the class of 2012 after attending Buford High School in Georgia. Freitag was a 4-star recruit out of high school and had only a single reception for 11 yards so far this season for Bama.
A spokeswoman for the University of Alabama said Monday afternoon that UA would look into the incident, but offered nothing further. A spokesman for WANTF and the Tuscaloosa Police Department declined to comment.
The Alabama legislature has considered a bill that would decriminalize marijuana possession up to 1 ounce, but it did not pass.
Alabama, currently 5-1 on the season and ranked No. 7 in the nation, hosts Texas A&M in Tuscaloosa on Saturday.
