The parents of a severely disabled British 5-year-old sadly confess that if they knew how badly their son was going to suffer they would have terminated their pregnancy.
"I love my son. He's changed our lives," Jill Kelly says to Daily Mail. "But if I'd known everything that Dylan would have to go through, and will have to go through, there's no doubt in my mind that, given the correct information, I would have asked for a termination."
Kelly's son, Dylan, was born with severe micrognathia, which means his lower jaw is significantly smaller than normal. The condition can cause breathing problems, teeth to not align properly and can interfere with feeding.
As a result of the illness Dylan slurs his words, is constantly stressed, is always in and out of hospitals and is fed nutrient-rich milk through a tube in his stomach, reports Daily Mail.
Caring for Dylan is more than a full-time job, which caused Kelly and her husband to both quit their jobs, become bankrupt and lose their house.
The couple, who have been married for about six years, blame the Royal Victoria Infirmary (RVI), which they were referred to after their sonographer noticed a deformity in Dylan's long bone and right arm.
Kelly tells Daily Mail they knew they were going to have a baby with a bad arm and a bad hand, but they didn't know before Dylan was born that he was going to have micrognathia.
The couple reportedly told RVI that if the child was going to be disabled they wanted an abortion and feel they were not given the "full picture" of Dylan's conditions.
