NCAA Moves Up Season Opener so Terminally Ill Player Can Participate

The NCAA has shifted around Mount Saint Joseph's basketball schedule so that terminally ill guard Lauren Hill will get an opportunity to play in college, ESPN reports.

Hill was diagnosed with Diffused Intrinsic Pentene Gleoma (DIPG) last fall when doctors discovered an inoperable brain tumor. The diagnosis came just weeks after she had committed to Mount Saint Joseph. The prognosis gave Hill less than two years to live.

However, Hill was insistent on continuing to play the game she loved, playing through her senior season at Lawrenceburg High while undergoing radiation treatments and chemotherapy.

"I never gave up for a second even when I got a terminal diagnosis; never thought about sitting back and not living life anymore," Hill told Local 12 in Cincinnati.

Doctors noticed significant growth from the tumor after an MRI last month and predicted she would not live past December of this year. The school quickly notified the NCAA of the situation and was able to move up a game against Hiram College to November 2 so that Hill might have a chance at fulfilling her dream of playing college basketball.
