Golden Globe nominee Emma Stone, known for her film work in "The Help," "Easy A" and "The Amazing Spider-Man," will soon make her Broadway debut as Sally Bowles in the revival of "Cabaret." Entertainment Weekly has released the first shot of her in costume as the infamous Sally Bowles.
"Cabaret" is based on John Van Druten's 1951 play "I Am a Camera," which was adapted from the short novel "Goodbye to Berlin" (1939) by Christopher Isherwood. Set in 1931 Berlin as the Nazis are rising to power, it is steeped in the nightlife at the sordid Kit Kat Klub. The main plot revolves around the 19-year-old English cabaret performer Sally Bowles, and her relationship with the young American writer Cliff Bradshaw. Most people recall the 1972 film version of "Cabaret" which won several Academy Awards, namely: Best Director for Bob Fosse; Best Actress for Liza Minnelli; and Best Supporting Actor for Joel Grey.
The 25 year-old Stone, who was previously considered for the role when "Cabaret" announced its Broadway return, but was unable to be involved due to commitments for a film project, will begin performances Nov. 11 for a run through Feb. 1, 2015. Stone replaces Michelle Williams, who made her own Broadway debut in the role when the Roundabout Theatre Company revival of the classic John Kander and Fred Ebb musical opened at Studio 54 earlier this year.
Stone was also on "The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon" last evening to promote "Birdman," but she and Fallon discuss her role as Bowles among other things. Take a look below:
