Google has finally zeroed in on a name for its Android 5.0 version - Lollipop, striking off other rumored names like Lemon Meringue Pie and Lava Cake among others.
Google, the renowned internet search company, unveiled the widely-anticipated Android 5.0 version, Lollipop, as a successor to the less-popular KitKat version. The introduction of Android Lollipop also puts an end to the long guessing game of what it will be called. While it was widely rumored that the next Android will be called Lemon Meringue Pie, Google chose Lollipop in favor of other names.
The Android Lollipop was launched alongside three new Nexus devices, Wednesday. The refreshed Nexus lineup includes a new tablet, smartphone and a streaming media player for music, movies and videos. The latest version of Google's mobile operating system is one of the biggest releases and marks the thirteenth major release of Android. Google's senior Vice President Sundar Pichai and CEO Larry Page worked on the new OS after taking over the operations last year.
The introduction of Android Lollipop means a new giant statue will be built on the lawn opposite to Building 44 on Google's Mountain View, California campus. The garden area already houses giant sculptures of various Android versions, including Ice Cream Sandwich, Chocolate Doughnut, KitKat and others,Bloomberg reports.
The new OS is a far cry from its predecessors, with developments made from ground up. According to the company's official Android blog post, Lollipop "is designed to be flexible, to work on all your devices and to be customized for you the way you see fit."
Android Lollipop brings several visual enhancements and major UI changes, summed up as Material Design, according to the Google Android 5.0 webpage. The new platform has a revamped menu with extensive multitasking options, a cleaner design with bold color combinations, fluid animations, better voice integration, improved battery and security, trusted Bluetooth connections and overall unification across various devices.
Android Lollipop will embrace new Nexus devices, the Nexus 6 by Motorola, Nexus 9 by HTC and Nexus Player by Asus. The new OS will also be available for older Nexus models including Nexus 4, 5, 7, 10 and Google Play editions in the upcoming weeks.
