Dictionary.com Updates iOS App, Includes iPhone 6 Support

In honor of Dictionary Day, Dictionary.com has released a new version of its iPhone app with several new features.

The new dictionary and thesaurus app, version 5.0, is designed to provide a better learning experience with its free and premium editions, offering resolution support for the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus and new images for Word of the Day, according to AppAdvice. Improvements have also been made to iCloud syncing.

A new Today widget is included in iOS 8's Notification Center, which not only shows the definition of the Word of the Day, but also offers a mini quiz for users that asks them to guess the featured word's definition before finding more information about it.

Features that will stay in the app's free version include the dictionary and thesaurus, daily slideshows, blog and trends, CNET reported.

Before the update, users had to pay between $0.99 and $2.99 for each individual type of dictionary on the app, such as a slang dictionary, a science dictionary, a medical dictionary and a rhyming dictionary. Other individual in-app purchases included a translator that had over 20 languages, example sentences, grammar and tips, idioms and phrases and an encyclopedia. But now, users can buy all of these features under one in-app purchase of $3.99. A Dictionary Day special is also available for $2.99.

Michele Turner, CEO of Dictionary.com, said the premium version of the app now has some of the company's most popular content, adding that the app's standard dictionary already has 2 million entries, CNET reported.

"We broadened its scope, providing users with more than 3.4 million definitions and examples in the premium version of the app," she said. "With these additional dictionaries and contextually relevant examples, students, business professionals and anyone who loves words now has the most comprehensive dictionary at the tap of a finger."

Word fanatics looking to take advantage of these new features can update their Dictionary.com apps on their iOS gadgets, or go to the iTunes app store to download the new version for free.
