Samsung Galaxy S4 Takes Lead in Sales at Verizon, Sprint, T-Mobile Stores, Apple iPhone 5 Ranks Second

Samsung's latest flagship smartphone, the Galaxy S4, outsold Apple's iPhone 5 in three out of four major carrier stores in the U.S. for the month of May, 2013, while Apple still managed to rank second in all stores and continues to top in AT&T retail.

Samsung Galaxy S4 tops sales at Verizon, Sprint and T-Mobile Stores after suffering a brief shortage of supply earlier in April. It has gained number one position in sales driving Apple's iPhone 5 sales to second position, according to the latest carrier retail sales data collected from store surveys by Canaccord Genuity. Apple's eight-month-old iPhone 5 continues to remain the favorite in AT&T retail, with Galaxy S4 trailing.

According to Canaccord Genuity, Apple iPhone 5 was number one contender in sales at all four stores with Samsung's Galaxy S3 taking the second position at AT&T, Verizon and Sprint, while Galaxy Note II trailed in February and March 2013. After the launch of Samsung's latest Galaxy S4 at AT&T and Sprint, it took the second position giving competition to the leading Apple iPhone 5. Once Samsung fixed the limited availability issue in April, Galaxy S4 quickly gained number one position at three out of the four stores.

"We believe dominant sales of the S4 versus other Android smartphones was driven by Samsung's extremely strong Galaxy consumer brand and well-executed marketing campaign, as our surveys indicated store representatives often recommended the HTC One ahead of the Galaxy S4," Canaccord Genuity analyst Michael Walkley said, according to Business Insider.

Walkley said that Samsung outsold Apple in the U.S for the first time since the launch of Apple's iPhone 5, September last year. Samsung gained the number one position in the U.S. with combined sales of Galaxy S4, S3 and Galaxy Note II.

With the top two positions occupied by Samsung and Apple at all major U.S. carrier stores, HTC's flagship smartphone, the One, ranked third in AT&T, Sprint and T-Mobile. Nokia Lumia 928 got in the race by taking the third position in top selling smartphones at Verizon retail.
