The Arizona Cardinals and Carson Palmer have begun negotiating a new deal for the 34-year-old quarterback, reports ESPN. The goal as of now is to reach an agreement before the season is over.
"I won't get into specific points of the negotiations, but we've had some dialogue with [Palmer's agent] Dave Dunn," Cardinals General Manager Steve Keim told the Arizona Republic. "[Palmer] has done a great job for us."
The 12-year veteran turns 35 in December, just a day before the regular season ends, and is in the second year of a three-year contract that will pay him $9 million this season. The third year, which voids shortly after the Super Bowl, was included in order to prorate Palmer's $6 million signing bonus for an additional season.
The Cardinals have gone 12-6 since acquiring Palmer from the Oakland Raiders in a trade last April. Last season, he threw for a career-high 4,274 yards, becoming the first quarterback in NFL history to reach 4,000 passing yards with three different teams.
Although Palmer missed three games this season with a bruised nerve in his right throwing shoulder, he has been effective in his two starts. He's thrown for 554 yards, four touchdowns and no interceptions.
As mentioned on HNGN before, Palmer's continued presence with the Cardinals bodes well for the fantasy value of receiver Michael Floyd.
The Cardinals (4-1) will play the Raiders (0-5) this weekend.
