Amazon's Grocery Delivery Service Makes its Way to Brooklyn, Continues NYC Expansion

Amazon continues its expansion of AmazonFresh in New York City, announcing Friday that the grocery delivery service is now available in Brooklyn.

Consumers will have over 500,000 items to choose from and have delivered on the same day, with options including fresh groceries, toys, household products and electronics, according to TechCrunch. Dickenson's Farmstand Meats, The Lobster Place, Gotham Greens, Amy's Bread and other local shops will provide their products for the service.

Prime members in Park Slope will be the first to get to use AmazonFresh. However, Amazon said it will bring its service to other areas in Brooklyn.

AmazonFresh made its debut in 2007 in Mercer Island, Washington, close to the e-commerce giant's headquarters in Seattle, Mashable reported. Amazon would then bring the service to other areas in Seattle, as well as in parts of Los Angeles in 2013.

Amazon faces several competitors in New York in the grocery delivery market, including Google Express and FreshDirect, which is available in the New York metropolitan area, Long Island and New Jersey.

Customers have to order their items by 10 a.m. if they want to receive them by dinnertime, or by 10 p.m. if they want them by breakfast, TechCrunch reported.

Prime members will be able to use AmazonFresh for free until the end of the year. Afterwards, they will have to pay $299 per year for the service.
